Vancouver Island has lots to offer for deep sea enthusiasts
Nootka Sound, known for its place in Canada's history books and its breathtaking scenery, is one of our favorite places to paddle. Stories of its rich native history and the European connection to Friendly Cove only enrich our travels here. (This area is said to be the original place where white settlers and First Nations people met, the so-called "Birthplace of European influenced Canada.") Still, this is not the only interesting place we travel on Vancouver Island. This island is rich with wilderness and waterways and on our boats every summer, we hope to cover it all. Our trips to Kyuquot Sound, Clayoquot Sound and the Broken Islands are also explorations of Canada's great western island, its waterways and rainforests. view our prices and departure dates here...
Just getting to the launch point on Vancouver Island is an exciting trip
Our Nootka Sound trips launch from one of two places; Gold River or Zeballos. Either way, your drive to the launch site will be an adventure in itself. Usually including a ferry ride across the Strait of Georgia and definitely including a ride through Vancouver Island's forested mountains. You will have the opportunity to stop in some of the Island's unique communities along the way such as Comox, Campbell River and Woss.
Our guides will teach you more about Nootka sound than just kayaking
Knowing the history of this area will enrich your experience as you paddle within the Sound. Not only is Nootka Sound the ancient home to the Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nations people but it also has an important spot in the history of European influenced Canada. Nootka Sound is the site of the first meeting between Europeans and native Canadians. In fact, the name 'Nootka' does not come from the native language but from the Europeans misunderstanding of the Mowachaht people. When Captain James Cook and his ships first arrived at Nootka's Friendly Cove, the natives told them "Itchme nutka" which translated to 'it's easiest to go around.' The European traders heard "Nootka" and took it as the nations' name.
